Cinco De Mayo, The holiday of May 5th, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is a regional holiday celebrated in the City of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. It is not Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually on September 16th.
Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become ever more popular along the U.S. Mexico border and in parts of the U.S It is a celebration of Mexican culture, food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico. Several cities throughout the U.S. hold parades and concerts during the week.
