The Shiny Concrete

Here's a little story I wrote while waiting for a few minutes...
The Shiny Concrete

Once upon a time, there was a little piece of concrete. It didn't think many thoughts. However, when it came to sitting around and doing nothing, it excelled.

One day, sitting in the hot sun, as the little piece of concrete liked to do, an idea came upon it.

"I know, I will become the best and brightest little piece of concrete in the whole wide world," it would have said, if little pieces of concrete could talk...

Rock & Roll!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Norfolk, Virginia!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Rode in to Norfolk, VA last night. Took the paddlewheel ferry across the river from Portsmouth. There's tons of history in the area, this is where the English first settled the Americas, and later where the English and Americans fought decisive battles. It's also a naturally beautiful place, with lots of water including the river and also so close to the Atlantic Ocean. The high heat and humidity continue, making it difficult to do much, but pleasant just to be around. Today should get to the coast itself.
Bicyclist's neck (n.): soreness on one side of the neck from constantly turning to the left to look for traffic.
The solid tube continues to hold up well. Overall the riding's going smoothly! :)

Kudzu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I looked up this plant that I've seen all over the Southeast, literally! as it climbs, and it's called kudzu:

I think it's really beautiful, forming sculptures and seas and rivers of leaves, although the sites where I found info online seem to call it invasive. I say, let 'em come! :)
Rock & Roll!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Suffolk, VA! :)

After a good day of riding, on a solid tube!, got to Suffolk, Virginia! :)
Tried some regional barbecue with a vinegar-based sauce, which differs from various other styles of BBQ.
This area has really wide shoulders, a pleasant change of pace from many of the further inland areas I've been riding.
In getting through the ongoing stretch, I've had to learn a few new skills, for example to install that solid tube. It's tough making it out here, but it sure pays dividends in the forms of the amazing scenery and folks.
Rock & Roll!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Hot and Humid in Virginia! :)

Re-re-re-crossed the border (sorry, lost track of number of times), now in Franklin, VA!!! :)
It's extremely hot and humid out, makes it hard to do anything but lie around, let alone ride a bike long distance under the sun, and with sudden thunderstorms breaking out... Yet it's so wonderfully beautiful to travel through the landscapes, meet the local people, experience the diversity of life.
Here, in eastern NC/VA, I've seen lots of farms, looks like tons of corn and soy lately, giant trees I'm not sure the names of, many brilliantly colorful dragonflies, and a lot of Revolutionary and Civil War history.
Bike's been grinding it out... After the last flat, I installed a new product, which I've been curious to try for a long time... a solid inner tube! (I got mine on clearance at Walmart.) According to the box, it "WILL NEVER GO FLAT", so hopefully this should improve the riding going forward. So far, so smooth...

Rock & Roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

North Carolina Again!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

After riding up to Virginia, I'm now detouring briefly through North Carolina, on my way back to the coast. There are a few cool towns on this side of the border, making it worthwhile to twist a little on the way. Then, back up to VA! :)
On this little NC run, I've seen beautiful rivers, forests, eagles, farms, towns, and people!!! :)

Rock & Roll!!!!!!!!!! :)

Carrying on! :)

Moving through a few more small towns... Now in Emporia, Virginia...
Yesterday, passing by a tobacco farm, I tried chewing on a bit of fresh leaf. Woah! It felt like smoking ten cigarettes at once. Maybe that has more to do with how many years it's been since I smoked a cigarette, I don't know the nicotine content of the leaf (or if it's safe!)...
Today, I heard some music while looking at a mural with musicians on it, and after a bunch of clouds it's finally sunnying up again! :)

Rock & Roll!!!!!!!!!! :)
