Recent Reading: Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

In Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions, Dan Ariely covers some common and uncommon ways in which we humans act against how we want to act. The material generally comes from academic economics, specifically the subfield of behavioral economics. Ariely has an approachable style, telling lots of stories to illustrate his points. Sometimes he seems to fall a little too heavily for his own line of reasoning or personal politics, although he has a lot of captivating material. Overall he covers many mistakes -- and good things -- about what we should do with our lives.

Yesterday went to the BBQ World Championship cookoffs, which is part of the Houston Rodeo.

Here I am as a guitar guy:

Year Two: Astrotripping through the Southwest

Submitted by eagle on Fri, 02/27/2015 - 22:02

Dear Life Traveler,

Thank you!!! I appreciate your involvement over the last two years. This weekend marks my second year on this wonderful trip. It has been another amazing year of adventures!!! Over the last twelve months, I have traveled from San Diego, California to Houston, Texas, through the southwestern USA and northern Mexico. In this time period, I have met many more incredible people, and known friends more deeply. I have also continued to write about astronomy and beyond. Here you have a summary of events. It will be a pleasure to receive any replies you have.

Here's to another fortunate year of discovery!!!

Love,

Eagle

Riding

My ride went through some of the most beautiful lands, in the American Southwest and in northern Mexico. My route went from California through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as Chihuahua, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, and Nuevo Leon.

Here is a map of my travels to date:

Writing

As I have traveled, I also continued to write. Several magazine feature articles describe the wonderful new astronomy research happening at various observatories I have visited. My book continues to develop, with a new title. And I now have and a new agent and publicist. Also, I have started a new online project.

Astrotripping

The theme of my current creativity, Astrotripping describes new space science, highlighting technology and research advances, at unique locations. The book I am writing now has the title:

Astrotripping: A Voyage of Cosmic Curiosity

Magazine Articles

A lot of the Astrotripping stories start from magazine features. Stories that have been published over the last year include:

Scientists Complete Array on Mexican Volcano, describing the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory, published by Symmetry, the magazine of the US Department of Energy national labs.

Birth of a Giant Telescope (PDF), describing the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT), published by BBC Sky at Night.

Agent

I am happy to announce that I now have a literary agent. Lane Heymont of the Seymour Agency brings a smart and critical addition. He is now connecting Astrotripping with an appropriate publisher.

Publicist

Avril Olachea, of Los Pistoleros, now acts as my publicist. She arranges talks at research and educational organizations, as well as other initiatives.

Worlds O Wisdom

In addition to Astrotripping, I have started an exciting new project. Worlds O Wisdom (WOW), an interactive website, where I have also started to blog, covers what we should do with our lives, from new perspectives. It currently contains two WOWs: CodeWOW, which provides new behavioral codes, and TaleWOW, which provides collaborative storytelling. Please have a look, and contribute what you can!

Mailing List: eagleflight

As you can see from this e-mail, I'm now using a mailing list to send out updates. On this list, called eagleflight, I will also occasionally mention the publication of new writing, and other highlights. If you do not want to receive these e-mails, or if you want to add another address (for you or someone else), you can change a subscription yourself here, or just reply to me with an e-mail and I will update the list.

Next!

So, what's next?! Well, I plan for the upcoming year to continue riding, first along the rest of the Gulf Coast -- Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama -- then up and around throughout the heartland of America -- Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and more.

Do you have any recommendations for activities to do, places to see, or people to meet, in the upcoming zones?

Also, I continue to write Astrotripping, and this year should see a draft ready for publishing. Then begins the next stage of the book production process. Meanwhile, the adventures roll on.

Beyond that, we'll find out!!!

Best regards,
