Sitting in his room, the boy started to dream. What would it be like if he went over to another country, another land, another world?

He didn't know too much about the world. How many other countries were there? How do you go to another country?

Still, he thought the idea sounded nice. He pictured himself sitting in a fancy hotel room, looking out over the sea. The sea glistened and sparkled in the sun, in his imagination.

The boy sat up straight. Suddenly it felt so ''real''. Like he was actually there, by the sea. He thought for a second that he could really go to the sea. It wouldn't be that hard, would it?

No, that was nonsense! How could someone of his age go to another country all on his own?

It made him sad to think that he couldn't go. He wanted to go, though, so he kept on thinking up ideas.

What if he swam? Or surfed? No, that's not practical. He wasn't sure if the river near his home connected to the sea.

Or what if he took a boat? But he didn't have a boat, or a boat ticket, or a friend with a boat. And there was still the problem of getting from the river to the sea.

What about flying? Don't people usually fly to islands? But again the boy didn't have an airplane or a ticket, or know anyone who could fly. And he didn't have wings.

Just about ready to give up, the boy suddenly had a great idea!

What if...

''I walk to the sea?''

Every landmass touches the sea. Why not just walk to the sea? How far could it be?

He had already walked to the park, the store, and other places that seemed really far away. Maybe he could walk to the sea?

So the boy packed a few belongings and started walking.

He kept walking, and walking, and walking, and walking...

Along the way, he came across a stranger. The tall man wore an unusual hat, and he had a huge mustache. Even though the boy thought he looked funny, the man acted very serious. "Where are you going?" The stranger asked.

"I'm going to the sea!" The boy said.

The stranger laughed. "You can't go to the sea!"

"Why not?" asked the boy.

The stranger thought for a second. "It's too dangerous," he said. "There are pirates. And cannibals. They'll eat you like fish!"

The boy looked at the stranger. Was this true? He hadn't even considered pirates and cannibals. But they sounded pretty dangerous.

Even though he was dejected, the boy kept walking. He would think about these risks while carrying on, at least to make some headway.

While walking, the boy started to think some interesting thoughts. Then he kept on thinking, letting his mind roam free.

He thought of scary pirates that would capture him. They had big beards of different colors, and carried swords, and drank rum. The pirates would swing around their pirate ship on ropes, firing cannons at other ships and taking treasure. Maybe that's why he didn't know anyone with a boat: people were afraid of pirates?

The boy also thought of cannibals. He could picture strange-looking people who would eat other people. They wore bones in their hair and did crazy dances by the fire. Howling at the moon they would throw ashes into the air. They carried poison-tipped blowdarts, throwing axes, and bows and arrows. What if the he got to a distant country and they decided to eat him? He didn't like that idea at all!

While the boy was thinking these dreadful thoughts, he bumped into another stranger, this time a woman. She had a large hairdo, and she wore a colorful dress. She asked him, "Why do you look so scared?"

"I'm going to the sea, and I heard there are pirates and cannibals who would eat me."

"Oh!" screamed the woman. "You're right to be scared. The sea is a dangerous place. There are also sharks and whales that will eat you."

The boy became even sadder, but he kept on going. He had learned that sometimes you have to take risks and work hard to accomplish anything valuable.

After walking for a long, long, long, long, long time...

The boy came upon the sea!

It glistened and sparkled. Just like it had in his vision. The boy loved the sea. It felt like another world. A deep blue ocean that stretched out as far as he could see, shimmering with little white stars as the waves climbed up and foamed. Sargassum floated lazily on the waves. The boy could make out patterns in the surface of the sea, with patches of turquoise and different blues and greens and purples.

The boy smelled the fresh sea air as it blew into his nostrils. Salt spray washed into his face and hair. He let out a whoop of joy. When the water touched his lips it tasted salty like potato chips or pickles. He put some seawater in a bottle to use later in his cooking.

The seawater contained tiny amounts of gold, magnesium, and other valuable minerals. The boy also suspected that the seawater had a few molecules called amino acids spread throughout, which long ago had developed into early sea creatures...

The warm sand beneath his feet made the boy feel like he was walking on a magic carpet. Picking some sand up in his hands, it felt soft like a feather even though it was hard like a rock.

The boy analyzed the sand in his mind. He realized that it was kind of like the minerals in the seawater, but extracted from the water. When he examined the sand up close, he could make out all kinds of colors and sizes of sand particles. There were white, clear, pink, orange, brown, green, black, red, blue, purple, and other colors of sand! It was like seeing a sand rainbow!

A projectile flew over his head and over the sand. Was someone skipping rocks? The boy let the object fly, then turned back to the sea. It looked so gorgeous and inviting. He just wanted to jump in and swim. So he did!

And he swam, and he swam, and he swam, and he swam...

Under the sea, amid the currents and tides the boy could see some fish swimming around. Did this mean that there was a shark nearby? Was the boy about to get eaten? He looked around in fear.

The boy could see many other strange things under the sea. There were seaweeds and sea urchins, sea slugs and mermaids, octopuses galore, spiky animals with many eyes and scary sea creatures who had giant teeth and seemed to walk on the sea floor. Some creatures were clear and others had remarkable colors or even glowed. An electric eel swam by, zapping the boy like lightning! It hurt, but the boy gathered up his belongings (which were wet by now) and kept on swimming.

And swimming, and swimming, and swimming, and swimming...

Until he came upon coral reefs! The intricate shapes had fish of all different colors swimming among them. He could also see other bizarre animals and plants. There were clams, worms, crabs, sponges, animals the boy had never seen before, and millions of organisms so small that the boy couldn't even see them, he had to imagine them instead! Swimming down beneath the ocean was like going to a different world, one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen!

The boy had a sudden flash of inspiration and figured out that while the reefs looked like rocks, the corals were actually colonies of many tiny animals! He wrote out his thoughts on a waterproof phone:

:The soft little animals would eat their sea food then deposit small pieces of skeleton, which built up into huge interesting shapes and colors! This same process had produced the sea's sand, combined with rocks crumbling in the waves! Also the corrals would release their offspring into the sea at full moon.

:There weren't any humans around back when these primitive sea creatures first appeared, so humans must have evolved from the sea monsters. Wait! Does that mean that those strange sea creatures are my great-great-great-great-grandparents?! I guess they kind of look like me.

While thinking of strange sea creatures and evolution and the construction of sand and corral reefs, the boy accidentally swam into an underwater city! He had found the lost city of Atlantis! The boy looked around in wonder. It was an amazing place, with ornamental castles and convoluted channels.

Ready to catch his breath, the boy swam up for some air. Then he kept on swimming...

And swimming, and swimming, and swimming, and swimming...

Until he came upon a big ship!

The people on the ship were laughing and dancing. It seemed like they were having a party. They talked in some strange language that the boy didn't understand. Nothing made sense. Then he remembered a book he had read a long time ago, and imitating what he remembered he put a special fish in his ear that allowed him to understand the people on the ship.

"Would you like this?" one of the people on the ship asked, offering the boy a drink.

"Um, OK." The boy started drinking it. It tasted delicious, like lime juice but with a special extra flavor. "What is it?"

"It's rum punch."

''Uh oh'', thought the boy. ''They're drinking rum. Are these... pirates?''

The boy started looking around for a way off the ship, but he didn't see any. He was trapped!

Were they going to take his belongings? Or tie him to the mast? Or keelhaul him?

As the boy looked around in fear, one of the shipmen picked him up.

The large man lifted the boy onto his shoulders. "Look around! It's beautiful, isn't it?"

The boy looked around. In every direction there was more of the glistening sea, an entire ocean world. Dolphins leaped playfully out of the water. It was another of the most beautiful things he had ever seen.

"Come with us!" said the man.

"Where are we going?"

"To foreign and exotic lands!" shouted the man with joy.

Through the vast expanses of wonderful sea, they kept on sailing...

And sailing, and sailing, and sailing, and sailing...

Until they came upon another land!

It was a small island. Not a big continent like where the boy grew up. In fact this island was so small that the boy could see practically the whole thing as they sailed up to it. Green rainforests covered the mountains and hills with huge leaves on trees like banana and breadfruit, coffee and cacao, and bright colorful tropical flowers on other plants. Rocks poked out into the open. A volcano was erupting at the island's peak. Birds swooped around overhead, including swallow-tailed kites and pelicans and seagulls.

When he climbed off the ship onto the land, a tribesperson greeted him. At first the boy didn't understand, but then he remembered to put the fish in his ear. "What are you doing here?" The tribesperson asked.

"Um," the boy hesitated, not knowing what to answer. He wasn't sure what they were expecting, or what was an acceptable answer. "I'm traveling. I want to see foreign and exotic lands, and meet new people."

"Come with us," said the tribesperson.

"Where are we going?"

The tribesperson led the boy off to an enclosed area of the beach, where there was a large fire.

The boy could make out several people dancing crazily by the fire.

''Uh oh'', he thought. ''These must be cannibals! Are they going to eat me?''

The crazy dancers grabbed the boy. As they kept on dancing around the fire they pulled him into their dance. Drums pounded and the people shouted.

''This must be their cannibal ceremony'', the boy thought. ''Are they going to grill me, or stew me, or boil me?''

One of the dancers handed the boy a drink. It tasted like the rum punch, but with more fruits in it. Papaya, and mango, and guava, and passionfruit. It was among the most delicious flavors he'd ever tasted!

Soon the crazy dancers started eating, and they gave the boy plate after plate after plate of delicious food, unlike anything he had ever tasted before. He kept on eating, appreciating all of the new and exotic and foreign flavors from a different world. It was another party!

"Who are you?" the boy asked one of the dancers.

"We are the Kabinal people. Our ancestors have lived on this island for thousands of years."

''Oh,'' thought the boy. ''They're Kabinals, not cannibals. These people are my friends!''

Together they kept on dancing and eating and partying through the night.

When the sun came up in the morning, the boy felt tired. He fell asleep right there, on the beach.

After sleeping a while, he woke up feeling refreshed. Breaking open a coconut with a pocket knife he carried, the boy ate and drank and took a bath in the coconut's contents. Yum! Ready to go to another island.

The boy looked around for a while, but he couldn't find any boats or ships.

"Excuse me," the boy said to an islander. "Where are all the boats?"

"Oh, they've canceled the boats," said the islander. "Apparently there's a sickness going around."

"Do the other islands also have this sickness?" the boy asked.

"Yes. It's everywhere."

"Then it wouldn't matter if people go from island to island."

The islander looked on blankly. People had started to wear weird masks that covered their facial expressions.

Wanting to leave this island, which he had now already seen, the boy kept waiting for the boats to come back.

And waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting...

But the boats didn't come back.

The boy read about the sickness. He learned that people who had the virus actually lived longer and healthier than people who never had it.

''Oh!'' he thought. ''This isn't a sickness. It's a natural health boost!''

The boy tore off his mask and smiled for all the world to see. It was among the most glorious and happy smiles.

Eventually, even though the islanders kept wearing their weird facemasks, the boats started coming back.

"I'm leaving!" the boy declared. He got on the next boat out of there, and traveled...

And traveled, and traveled, and traveled, and traveled...

The boy traveled to many other islands, through the vast sea. On each island he found different cultures, different beaches, different foods, and different languages. Nonetheless he felt a common thread linking together the different islands.

Some of the islands had music with guitars and singing while other islands had music with drums and yelling. On some islands people lived in little huts that they built themselves, while other islands had opulent mansions. Each island had different colors and styles of clothing. On some of the islands people didn't even wear clothes!

Often the journey was difficult, but the boy liked it and kept on traveling. When there was a hurricane, he would hide out in a shelter. When there was crime, he would fight back against the criminals. Usually though the he had positive relationships with the people he met and the places he went.

In each country when the boy would tell people he was traveling, they would tell him scary things about the next land over. But the boy had learned that people are usually wrong. They are ignorant from not having traveled to other lands themselves. They are also biased against foreign people and places.

The boy resolved to ignore the ignorant people. He had already learned far more than they ever would. He had also had more fun. Instead of getting attacked and eaten by pirates and cannibals, he had met the most fascinating people and partied with them.

The sea had given the boy an amazing life. It had taught him many lessons, including to travel light and celebrate with other people. Also to work hard, take risks, and of course to learn from experience instead of trusting what people say. You have to keep going anyways, even with all of the fears inside and the threats outside. Don't let problems stop you, let them motivate you to go farther!

The boy didn't ignore everything people said, since sometimes people did say smart things. Especially the people who had also traveled. They often told him of interesting places to visit, or useful activities to do.

There's a certain balance. In disregarding ignorant speech but considering informed speech. In taking smart risks but not stupid risks. In work and play. In life and the sea.

You see, the sea itself is like a balance. There are corral reefs and strange sea creatures and hidden lands below the sea. There are also volcanoes and rainforests and birds above the sea. Around sea level there's a concentration of activity where people go on ships, party at the beach, pick fruits from trees, and live their lives. And that balance is always evolving, like the waves that rise and fall. We have to evolve and keep balance with the sea.

We're all part of the sea, realized the boy. A long way from home, yet the sea ''is'' home. We originally came from the sea and have a little bit of the sea inside of our bodies. In our blood and our saliva and every cell. Wherever we go we take the sea with us. Even when we're far away, in a room, dreaming of going to the sea...

Follow your dreams, live out your imagination, explore the world! Go from ignorance to knowledge through practical steps. Travel far and wide!

Sentado en su habitación, el niño comenzó a soñar. ¿Cómo sería si se fuera a otro país, otra tierra, otro mundo?

No sabía demasiado sobre el mundo. ¿Cuántos otros países había? ¿Cómo vas a otro país?

Aún así, pensó que la idea sonaba bien. Se imaginó a sí mismo sentado en una elegante habitación de hotel, mirando al mar. El mar brillaba y centelleaba al sol, en su imaginación.

El chico se sentó derecho. De repente se sintió tan "real". Como si estuviera realmente allí, junto al mar. Pensó por un segundo que realmente podría ir al mar. No sería tan difícil, ¿verdad?

¡No, eso era una tontería! ¿Cómo alguien de su edad podría irse a otro país por su cuenta?

Le entristecía pensar que no podía ir. Sin embargo, él quería ir, así que siguió pensando en ideas.

¿Y si nadaba? ¿O surfeó? No, eso no es práctico. No estaba seguro de si el río cerca de su casa se conectaba con el mar.

¿O si tomó un bote? Pero él no tenía un bote, ni un boleto de bote, ni un amigo con un bote. Y aún quedaba el problema de ir del río al mar.

¿Qué hay de volar? ¿La gente no suele volar a las islas? Pero, de nuevo, el chico no tenía avión ni billete, ni conocía a nadie que supiera volar. Y no tenía alas.

¡Casi listo para darse por vencido, el chico de repente tuvo una gran idea!

Y si...

''¿Camino hacia el mar?''

Cada masa de tierra toca el mar. ¿Por qué no caminar hasta el mar? ¿Qué tan lejos podría ser?

Ya había caminado hasta el parque, la tienda y otros lugares que parecían muy lejanos. ¿Tal vez podría caminar hasta el mar?

Así que el niño empacó algunas pertenencias y comenzó a caminar.

Siguió caminando, y caminando, y caminando, y caminando...

En el camino, se encontró con un extraño. El hombre alto usaba un sombrero inusual y tenía un gran bigote. Aunque el niño pensó que se veía divertido, el hombre actuó muy serio. "¿Adónde vas?" preguntó el extraño.

"¡Me voy al mar!" dijo el chico.

El extraño se rió. "¡No puedes ir al mar!"

"¿Por qué no?" preguntó el chico.

El extraño pensó por un segundo. "Es demasiado peligroso", dijo. "Hay piratas. Y caníbales. ¡Te comerán como pescado!"

El niño miró al extraño. ¿Era esto cierto? Ni siquiera había considerado piratas y caníbales. Pero sonaban bastante peligrosos.

Aunque estaba abatido, el niño siguió caminando. Pensaría en estos riesgos mientras continuaba, al menos para avanzar.

Mientras caminaba, el niño comenzó a pensar en algunos pensamientos interesantes. Luego siguió pensando, dejando que su mente divagara libremente.

Pensó en piratas aterradores que lo capturarían. Tenían grandes barbas de diferentes colores, y llevaban espadas y bebían ron. Los piratas se balanceaban alrededor de su barco pirata con cuerdas, disparando cañones a otros barcos y tomando tesoros. Tal vez por eso no conocía a nadie con un barco: ¿la gente le tenía miedo a los piratas?

El niño también pensó en los caníbales. Podía imaginar personas de aspecto extraño que se comerían a otras personas. Llevaban huesos en el pelo y hacían bailes locos junto al fuego. Aullando a la luna arrojarían cenizas al aire. Llevaban dardos con punta venenosa, hachas arrojadizas, arcos y flechas. ¿Y si llega a un país lejano y deciden comérselo? ¡No le gustó nada la idea!

Mientras el niño estaba pensando en estos terribles pensamientos, se topó con otro extraño, esta vez una mujer. Tenía un peinado grande y vestía un vestido colorido. Ella le preguntó: "¿Por qué te ves tan asustado?"

"Voy al mar, y escuché que hay piratas y caníbales que me comerían".

"¡Vaya!" gritó la mujer. "Tienes razón en estar asustado. El mar es un lugar peligroso. También hay tiburones y ballenas que te comerán".

El niño se puso aún más triste, pero siguió adelante. Había aprendido que a veces hay que correr riesgos y trabajar duro para lograr algo valioso.

Después de caminar durante mucho, mucho, mucho, mucho, mucho tiempo...

¡El muchacho llegó al mar!

Brillaba y centelleaba. Tal como lo había hecho en su visión. El niño amaba el mar. Se sentía como otro mundo. Un océano azul profundo que se extendía hasta donde alcanzaba la vista, brillando con pequeñas estrellas blancas mientras las olas subían y formaban espuma. Sargassum flotaba perezosamente sobre las olas. El niño podía distinguir patrones en la superficie del mar, con manchas de turquesa y diferentes azules, verdes y morados.

El niño olió el aire fresco del mar mientras soplaba en sus fosas nasales. El rocío salino se lavó en su rostro y cabello. Dejó escapar un grito de alegría. Cuando el agua tocó sus labios, sabía salada como papas fritas o pepinillos. Puso un poco de agua de mar en una botella para usarla más tarde en su cocina.

El agua de mar contenía pequeñas cantidades de oro, magnesio y otros minerales valiosos. El niño también sospechaba que el agua de mar tenía unas pocas moléculas llamadas aminoácidos repartidas por todas partes, que hace mucho tiempo se habían desarrollado en las primeras criaturas marinas...

La cálida arena bajo sus pies hizo que el niño se sintiera como si estuviera caminando sobre una alfombra mágica. Recogiendo un poco de arena en sus manos, se sentía suave como una pluma a pesar de que era dura como una roca.

El niño analizó la arena en su mente. Se dio cuenta de que era como los minerales del agua de mar, pero extraídos del agua. Cuando examinó la arena de cerca, pudo distinguir todo tipo de colores y tamaños de partículas de arena. ¡Había arena blanca, transparente, rosa, naranja, marrón, verde, negra, roja, azul, púrpura y otros colores! ¡Era como ver un arcoíris de arena!

Un proyectil voló sobre su cabeza y sobre la arena. ¿Alguien estaba saltando rocas? El niño dejó volar el objeto y luego se volvió hacia el mar. Se veía tan hermoso y atractivo. Solo quería saltar y nadar. ¡Así lo hizo!

Y nadó, y nadó, y nadó, y nadó...

Bajo el mar, en medio de las corrientes y mareas, el niño pudo ver algunos peces nadando. ¿Significaba esto que había un tiburón cerca? ¿Estaba el niño a punto de ser comido? Miró a su alrededor con miedo.

El niño pudo ver muchas otras cosas extrañas bajo el mar. Había algas y erizos de mar, babosas de mar y sirenas, pulpos en abundancia, animales puntiagudos con muchos ojos y criaturas marinas aterradoras que tenían dientes gigantes y parecían caminar sobre el fondo del mar. Algunas criaturas eran claras y otras tenían colores notables o imitaban a otros animales o incluso brillaban. ¡Una anguila eléctrica pasó nadando, golpeando al niño como un rayo! Dolía, pero el niño recogió sus pertenencias (que ya estaban mojadas) y siguió nadando.

Y nadando, nadando, nadando y nadando...

¡Hasta que llegó a los arrecifes de coral! Las formas intrincadas tenían peces de todos los colores nadando entre ellos. También pudo ver otros animales y plantas extraños. Había almejas, gusanos, cangrejos, esponjas, animales que el niño nunca había visto antes, y millones de organismos tan pequeños que el niño ni siquiera podía verlos, ¡tenía que imaginárselos! Nadar bajo el océano era como ir a un mundo diferente, ¡uno de los lugares más hermosos que jamás había visto!

El niño tuvo un repentino destello de inspiración y se dio cuenta de que, si bien los arrecifes parecían rocas, ¡los corales eran en realidad colonias de muchos animales diminutos! Escribió sus pensamientos en un teléfono a prueba de agua:

: ¡Los pequeños animales suaves comían su marisco y luego depositaban pequeños trozos de esqueleto, que se acumulaban en formas y colores enormes e interesantes! ¡Este mismo proceso había producido la arena del mar, combinada con rocas que se desmoronaban en las olas! También los corrales soltaban a sus crías al mar en luna llena.

: No había humanos en la época cuando aparecieron por primera vez estas criaturas marinas primitivas, por lo que los humanos deben haber evolucionado de los monstruos marinos. ¡Esperar! ¡¿Eso significa que esas extrañas criaturas marinas son mis tatarabuelos?! Supongo que se parecen a mí.

Mientras pensaba en extrañas criaturas marinas y la evolución y la construcción de arena y arrecifes de coral, ¡el niño accidentalmente nadó hacia una ciudad submarina! ¡Había encontrado la ciudad perdida de la Atlántida! El chico miró a su alrededor con asombro. Era un lugar increíble, con castillos ornamentales y canales enrevesados.

Listo para recuperar el aliento, el niño nadó para tomar un poco de aire. Luego siguió nadando...

Y nadando, nadando, nadando y nadando...

¡Hasta que se encontró con un gran barco!

La gente en el barco se reía y bailaba. Parecía que estaban teniendo una fiesta. Hablaban en un idioma extraño que el niño no entendía. Nada tenía sentido. Entonces recordó un libro que había leído hace mucho tiempo, e imitando lo que recordaba se puso un pez especial en la oreja que le permitía entender a la gente del barco.

"¿Te gustaria esto?" preguntó una de las personas en el barco, ofreciéndole una bebida al niño.

"Eh, está bien". El niño comenzó a beberlo. Sabía delicioso, como jugo de lima pero con un sabor extra especial. "¿Qué es?"

"Es ponche de ron".

''Uh oh'', pensó el chico. Están bebiendo ron. ¿Estos son... piratas?

El chico empezó a buscar una forma de salir del barco, pero no vio ninguna. ¡Estaba atrapado!

¿Iban a llevarse sus pertenencias? ¿O atarlo al mástil? ¿O quillarlo?

Mientras el niño miraba a su alrededor con miedo, uno de los marineros lo recogió.

El hombre corpulento cargó al niño sobre sus hombros. "¡Mira a tu alrededor! Es hermoso, ¿no?"

El chico miró a su alrededor. En todas direcciones había más del mar reluciente, todo un mundo oceánico. Los delfines saltaban juguetonamente fuera del agua. Era otra de las cosas más hermosas que jamás había visto.

"¡Ven con nosotros!" dijo el hombre.

"¿A dónde vamos?"

"¡A tierras extrañas y exóticas!" gritó el hombre con alegría.

A través de las vastas extensiones del maravilloso mar, siguieron navegando...

Y navegar, y navegar, y navegar, y navegar...

¡Hasta que llegaron a otra tierra!

Era una isla pequeña. No es un gran continente como donde creció el niño. De hecho, esta isla era tan pequeña que el niño podía ver prácticamente todo mientras navegaban hacia ella. Las selvas tropicales verdes cubrieron las montañas y las colinas con hojas enormes en árboles como el plátano y la fruta del pan, el café y el cacao, y flores tropicales de colores brillantes en otras plantas. Las rocas asomaban al aire libre. Un volcán estaba en erupción en la cima de la isla. Los pájaros volaban en picado, incluidos los milanos de cola bifurcada, los pelícanos y las gaviotas.

Cuando bajó del barco a tierra, un miembro de la tribu lo saludó. Al principio el niño no entendió, pero luego se acordó de poner el pescado en su oreja. "¿Qué estás haciendo aquí?" Preguntó el miembro de la tribu.

"Um", el chico vaciló, sin saber qué responder. No estaba seguro de lo que esperaban o de cuál era una respuesta aceptable. "Estoy de viaje. Quiero ver tierras extranjeras y exóticas, y conocer gente nueva".

"Ven con nosotros", dijo el miembro de la tribu.

"¿A dónde vamos?"

El miembro de la tribu llevó al niño a un área cerrada de la playa, donde había un gran incendio.

El niño pudo distinguir a varias personas bailando locamente junto al fuego.

"Uh oh", pensó. ¡Estos deben ser caníbales! ¿Me van a comer?''.

Los bailarines locos agarraron al niño. Mientras seguían bailando alrededor del fuego, lo arrastraron a su baile. Los tambores redoblaban y la gente gritaba.

''Esta debe ser su ceremonia caníbal'', pensó el niño. "¿Me van a asar a la parrilla, o me van a guisar, o me van a hervir?"

Uno de los bailarines le dio una bebida al niño. Sabía como el ponche de ron, pero con más frutas. Papaya, mango, guayaba y maracuyá. ¡Fue uno de los sabores más deliciosos que jamás había probado!

Pronto, los bailarines locos comenzaron a comer, y le dieron al niño un plato tras otro de comida deliciosa, diferente a todo lo que había probado antes. Siguió comiendo, apreciando todos los sabores nuevos, exóticos y extraños de un mundo diferente. ¡Era otra fiesta!

"¿Quién eres?" preguntó el niño a uno de los bailarines.

"Somos el pueblo Kabinal. Nuestros antepasados han vivido en esta isla durante miles de años".

"Oh", pensó el niño. ''Son Kabinals, no caníbales. ¡Estas personas son mis amigos!''.

Juntos siguieron bailando, comiendo y festejando toda la noche.

Cuando salió el sol por la mañana, el niño se sintió cansado. Se quedó dormido allí mismo, en la playa.

Después de dormir un rato, se despertó sintiéndose renovado. Rompiendo un coco con una navaja que llevaba, el niño comió y bebió y se bañó en el contenido del coco. ¡mmm! Listo para ir a otra isla.

El niño miró a su alrededor por un rato, pero no pudo encontrar ningún bote o barco.

"Disculpe", dijo el niño a un isleño. "¿Dónde están todos los barcos?"

"Oh, han cancelado los barcos", dijo el isleño. "Aparentemente hay una enfermedad dando vueltas".

"¿Las otras islas también tienen esta enfermedad?" preguntó el chico.

"Sí. Está en todas partes".

"Entonces no importaría si la gente va de isla en isla".

El isleño miró fijamente. La gente había comenzado a usar máscaras extrañas que cubrían sus expresiones faciales.

Queriendo salir de esta isla, que ahora ya había visto, el niño siguió esperando que regresaran los barcos.

Y esperando, y esperando, y esperando, y esperando...

Pero los barcos no regresaron.

El niño leyó sobre la enfermedad. Aprendió que las personas que tenían el virus en realidad vivían más tiempo y con más salud que las personas que nunca lo habían tenido.

"¡Ay!", pensó. “Esto no es una enfermedad. ¡Es un impulso natural para la salud!''

El niño se quitó la máscara y sonrió para que todo el mundo lo viera. Fue una de las sonrisas más gloriosas y felices.

Eventualmente, a pesar de que los isleños seguían usando sus extrañas máscaras faciales, los botes comenzaron a regresar.

"¡Me voy!" declaró el chico. Se subió al próximo barco que salió de allí y viajó...

Y viajé, y viajé, y viajé, y viajé...

El niño viajó a muchas otras islas, a través del vasto mar. En cada isla encontró diferentes culturas, diferentes playas, diferentes comidas y diferentes idiomas. Sin embargo, sintió un hilo común que unía las diferentes islas.

Algunas de las islas tenían música con guitarras y cantos, mientras que otras islas tenían música con tambores y gritos. En algunas islas la gente vivía en pequeñas cabañas que ellos mismos construían, mientras que otras islas tenían mansiones opulentas. Cada isla tenía diferentes colores y estilos de ropa. ¡En algunas de las islas la gente ni siquiera usaba ropa!

A menudo, el viaje era difícil, pero al niño le gustaba y seguía viajando. Cuando había un huracán, se escondía en un refugio. Cuando había crimen, luchaba contra los criminales. Por lo general, aunque tenía relaciones positivas con las personas que conocía y los lugares a los que iba.

En cada país, cuando el niño le decía a la gente que estaba viajando, le decían cosas aterradoras sobre la próxima tierra. Pero el niño había aprendido que la gente suele equivocarse. Son ignorantes por no haber viajado a otras tierras ellos mismos. También tienen prejuicios contra personas y lugares extranjeros.

El muchacho resolvió ignorar a la gente ignorante. Ya había aprendido mucho más de lo que ellos alguna vez aprenderían. También se había divertido más. En lugar de ser atacado y comido por piratas y caníbales, conoció a las personas más fascinantes y se divirtió con ellos.

El mar le había dado al niño una vida increíble. Le había enseñado muchas lecciones, incluida la de viajar ligero y celebrar con otras personas. También para trabajar duro, arriesgarse y, por supuesto, aprender de la experiencia en lugar de confiar en lo que dice la gente. Tienes que seguir adelante de todos modos, incluso con todos los miedos adentro y las amenazas afuera. ¡Que los problemas no te detengan, deja que te motiven a llegar más lejos!

El niño no ignoraba todo lo que decía la gente, ya que a veces la gente decía cosas inteligentes. Especialmente las personas que también habían viajado. A menudo le hablaban de lugares interesantes para visitar o actividades útiles para hacer.

Hay un cierto equilibrio. En descartar el discurso ignorante pero considerando el discurso informado. En tomar riesgos inteligentes pero no riesgos estúpidos. En el trabajo y el juego. En la vida y el mar.

Verás, el mar mismo es como un equilibrio. Hay arrecifes de coral y extrañas criaturas marinas y tierras escondidas debajo del mar. Hay también volcanes y selvas tropicales y pájaros sobre el mar. Alrededor del nivel del mar hay una concentración de actividad donde las personas van en barcos, festejan en la playa, recogen frutas de los árboles y viven sus vidas. Y ese equilibrio siempre está evolucionando, como las olas que suben y bajan. Tenemos que evolucionar y mantener el equilibrio con el mar.

Todos somos parte del mar, se dio cuenta el chico. Un largo camino desde casa, pero el mar ''es'' nuestro hogar. Originariamente venimos del mar y tenemos un poco de mar dentro de nuestros cuerpos. En nuestra sangre y nuestra saliva y cada célula. Donde quiera que vayamos, llevamos el mar con nosotros. Incluso cuando estamos lejos, en una habitación, soñando con ir al mar...
