Should you work for free?
For example, in starting a business or creative venture, should you do gigs that do not pay money?
Yes, but only in limited amounts, according to experienced people
Doing some sample projects early on for free can help build your profile. However, beyond that, working for free can take away valuable time from paying projects, and convey a message of low worth.
Opinions differ. Some experience business people recommend continuing to do occasional projects for free, while others advocate against doing any free work. Probably a balance that takes into account your personal situation and available opportunities will yield an effective outcome.
Note also that some kinds of free work that benefit a cause have essentially the same effect as volunteering.
